How do we teach our children to love themselves for who they are, when our culture teaches them to compete with everyone else, and compare themselves to unrealistic models of perfection?
This is a question that comes up frequently, when I speak about the importance of self-love.
The journey of my life took me to the brink of death and back, and the biggest lesson I learned is that love is not a luxury. It’s a necessity. Our schools, our media, including our social media, almost seem designed to make us feel less than adequate. Changing this paradigm is something that’s close to my heart, because I believe that had I known, as a youngster, that I was worthy, and deserving of love, I most likely would not have gotten cancer!
So when Angie DeMuro, author and illustrator of children’s books, presented me with the idea of a children’s book inspired by my teachings about self-love, I was beyond thrilled! Angie took my words and messages and masterfully transformed them into this wonderful book. She took many of the concepts I have shared through my writing and videos, and turned them into easy to understand scenarios for children (and even adults!)
This book takes the reader on a journey, exploring what it feels like to experience love, how to share it, and the importance of recognizing it. It explains the ineffable in very simple ways, using enchanting illustrations to make the points.
Most of us find it easier to love ourselves when things are going well, but it’s when we fail, fall flat on our face, or feel ashamed, that we most need to love ourselves. It’s important for children (and even adults!) to know that when it’s the hardest, that’s when it’s the most important to love ourselves.
As well-meaning adults, we tend to cushion our children from experiencing failure, because we can’t bear the thought of them experiencing the pain of shame and disappointment. Personally, I believe this does little to prepare them to handle failure as adults. To me, self-love is not about denying failure. It’s about loving ourselves through failure. It’s about being our own best friend, when we need it most, instead of judging ourselves, and beating ourselves up.
What I particularly love about our new book is that it touches on loving yourself even through failure and tough times.
I am overjoyed to introduce this book, “Love- a story about who you truly are”!
