What’s wrong with expressing myself, or being who I am?

What’s wrong with expressing myself, or being who I am?

Drumroll please! First things first! You probably know that we held a competition for Valentine’s Day and I am delighted to say that we picked 14 random winners out of a hat, and they are from all over the world: Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, India, Ireland, Netherlands, Switzerland and right here in the USA. My assistant Roz has been touch with each of them and my team will be mailing each of them a copy of Love: a story about who you truly are signed by both Angie and myself.

Congratulations to Angela Dacosta, Linda Dewees, Colleen Doherty, Renee Gallegos, Maya Hetman, Jan Hoffart, Sunita Kapur, Jovana Moeke, Angela Moreno, Jana Nachlingerova, Deepak Patil, Christine Stone, Nicole Straten and to the final winner who asked to remain anonymous.

Speaking of drums, I have to tell you what Danny and I have been up to recently. You probably know we’re going on a cruise in a couple of weeks right? Well, we found out that there’s going to be 2 formal nights so we thought that it would be really fun if we took some dance lessons before getting on the ship! So, for the last two weeks, Danny, who insists that he has two left feet, and I have been learning the Waltz, the Tango and the Foxtrot. I can’t even begin to tell you how much fun it’s been and while it’s probably a little too early for us to enter “Dancing with the Stars”, 😂 this has certainly been something that I can see Danny and I continuing to get better at. Now, if you’d asked me a few months ago if I could see myself learning to dance, I’d probably have said “no”. But you know what? I’d often thought to myself that I’d love to be able to dance, and at least have some good moves when there’s music on, and I’m on stage, but didn’t know where to start. When I was younger, actually a lot younger, I used to dress like Cyndi Lauper. I had the short spiky hair with the color streaks, and that’s how I expressed myself. I used to love dancing back then, but haven’t done it in years.

Recently, when I got over a really bad case of the flu, I became much more diligent in my self-care routine and started re-evaluating what was important in my life. One of the things I decided I wanted to do was to have more fun, and to exercise more! I had been working too hard. Even though I enjoy my work, I seem to always be either sitting on planes, or sitting in front of a computer (when I’m not on stage). The other day, Danny and I were walking down the street within our own neighborhood, and as we walked past the dance studio that’s always been there, we both stopped to read the notices posted on the glass front of the studio, because they were eye catching. They were posters advertising the dance classes for beginners, and he looked at me and said “Wouldn’t it be fun to do this?” And I said “Let’s go in and at least enquire!” Well, once we were at the front desk, that was it! We were sold! So we enrolled for their ballroom dancing classes, and have already had four lessons in just the last 10 days or so! But the main thing is, we have been having so much fun!

Speaking of Cyndi Lauper, many years ago, during my younger days and when I was still single, my parents used to put a lot of pressure on me to get married. In fact, an arranged marriage to be exact! That was back in the 80’s, and it was the norm in our culture. We are ethnically Indian. I rebelled, and Cyndi Lauper’s song “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” was my freedom song! One time, my parents even took me to see an Indian Guru, who actually told me that it was fundamentally wrong to allow myself to be who I truly was if it did not fit with ‘their’ cultural model of correctness. In my FaceBook LIVE last Sunday, I speak about that very visit to the ‘guru’ and the impact it had on me.

The video from that FaceBook LIVE is below and for those of you that prefer a podcast, that’s below as well.

Much Love,
Anita

What would I have done differently if I knew then what I know now?

What would I have done differently if I knew then what I know now?

I hope you’ve been doing well since last week. It’s Thursday evening in Los Angeles as I write this. Yesterday was Valentine’s Day, and back home in Hong Kong, today is Chinese New Year’s eve. By the time you get this newsletter, it will be Chinese New Year’s day, the first day of the Year of the Dog! I love dogs, so I think this will be a great year! So, whether you celebrate Chinese New Year or not, my sincerest wish for everyone is to have an amazing year ahead filled with love, warmth, happiness, and wisdom. Oh, and tons and tons of hugs. And if you have a dog, give them a hug from me! 🙂

A few days ago, on Sunday actually – I did another FaceBook LIVE and the subject that I was guided to speak about was “What would I have done differently if I knew then what I know now?” In this case, I was referring to dealing with illness. When I was diagnosed with cancer all those years ago, I approached it with a tremendous amount of fear – which is quite natural! The word cancer stirs up fear in most of us!

When I was dealing with the illness, I was fearful of the illness, fearful of the treatments, and fearful of death. I felt as though I was in a lose-lose situation. At that time, I felt I was trying everything, in terms of all the different healing modalities, but nothing seemed to work! I tried natural treatments, conventional treatments, and other alternative healing modalities, but frustratingly, my health continued to deteriorate! I was following every “anti-cancer” diet, taking all the supplements, and was constantly stressed out about making sure that I was following all the protocols and “getting it right”. I followed everything to a “T” and would panic when what I needed wasn’t available. I was so fearful about getting it wrong! In working so hard at getting it right, I didn’t realize that all of this just added to the stress and fear I was already going through with the illness. And to top it off, I was just getting sicker, instead of better! Nothing seemed to be working, and that made me more obsessive about trying even harder!

So nowadays, when people ask me for step by step instructions on how to heal from their illness, I am often hesitant to do so. We are all different, and I don’t want to add to the stress of their illness, by giving them more dogma, more instructions, more restrictions. In fact, if I knew then what I know now, I would have reacted to the illness completely differently. Instead of instantly researching anti cancer diets, protocols, and adding to the stress by obsessing about all the treatment plans, I would have consciously worked towards removing stress from my life! Including all the stress that caused me to get cancer in the first place! And I would have replaced it with joy!

I explain this in more detail in the video where I speak about this and much more. If you know of someone going through a health challenge, and you think that this video may support or help them in some way, please feel free to share this video with them.

The video is below or, if you prefer, you can download and listen to the podcast by clicking on the links.

Much Love,
Anita

Transforming Fear into Love ❤️❤️

Transforming Fear into Love ❤️❤️

You know, it’s been 3 weeks since I was last in touch. It started out with Danny having the flu, and then I ended up catching it from him! This must have been the worst bout of flu that I’ve ever had. It completely knocked the wind out of my sails but, at the same time, it forced both of us to slow down, and even take a little step backwards and to take a little bit of down time for ourselves. Fortunately we’re both over it now. YAY!!

I don’t know about you when you get sick, but as the days went on, and I still wasn’t feeling that great, I started to worry about about all of the things that were piling up that I had to do! I had to ask my assistant Roz to help me call and cancel appointments and meetings; I’d promised my friend Ibis that I would speak to her about the cruise she is organizing, which comes up next month (which I’m really looking forward to! Even more than ever now!); I’d promised my friend Barry that I’d be working with him on the cover design of the new meditation CD we’re putting out together in a few weeks; not to mention that I wanted to surprise Danny with Valentine’s Day dinner reservations to one of his favorite restaurants. However, the flu was so bad that everything had to take a back seat, except for some self care and self love! So things are a little behind schedule, and I do apologize for the delay in this newsletter!

Now this was just the flu, so it really wasn’t that much of an issue in the big tapestry but it reminded me of something that I spoke about in a video last summer. What happens when it’s a bigger illness and the worry changes to fear? How can we look at our lives and our situation in the most helpful way? I like to try and look at every situation with love, and share what I’ve learned about how to transform fear into love.

It was an interactive session with viewers so there were also some very important questions that were asked, like:

  • What if our illness is caused by something we did to ourselves?
  • What if I’m worried about another person’s health?
  • How do I stop focusing on physical pain?
  • How do I heal anxiety and fear of being judged?

All of these are great questions, which I think are questions that goes through so many of our minds.

I wanted to revisit what I said in that video but I wanted to make it easier for you to listen on the go if you wanted to so I’ve asked my team to turn it into a podcast for you. The link to listen or download is below.

Speaking of Valentine’s Day…… ❤️❤️❤️

Thankfully, we’ve both recovered, so we’ll be able to go out for that dinner date! We’ve even decided to go dancing, to practice our dance routine for evenings on the cruise! But I also wanted to come up with something fun to do with you for Valentine’s Day. I was pondering on what would be nice to do to celebrate the day of love, while I went out to get some groceries. As I was standing in the check out line, I overhead two women talking as they looked at the magazine display rack at the checkout. They were talking about how the only thing that seems to be on the magazine section shelves are dozens of publications that focus on who did what horrible thing to who! The other woman agreed and said that it’s not just magazines! It seems to be the case on TV too! Then the first woman said that she wished there was media that just focused on being nice and loving. I started thinking about what I’d overheard and realized that they were right, and this strengthened my resolve to always focus on sending LOVE, whenever I write, speak, or record! But…..I also wanted do a little something more.

I’d like to gift 14 signed copies of the children’s book I wrote with my friend and co-author Angie DeMuro – LOVE: A story about who you truly are. If you have a child, or know of a child that you think would benefit from this book, then please join the lucky draw for a book! If you are one of the random 14 people picked, we will send a copy, signed by both Angie and myself, to anywhere you are (or whatever address you give us).

Only registered subscribers to this newsletter can enter. To enter, all you have to do is go back to the email you received for this newsletter and click on the double-heart that’s next to your name at top of the newsletter. That’s all! Our system will inform us that you’ve been entered into the draw! We’ll be drawing the 14 winners on 14th February, 2018 at 2pm in Los Angeles. If you’re one of the winners, we’ll be writing to ask you where you would like us to mail your copy.

Much Love,
Anita

You are not broken (I promise!)

You are not broken (I promise!)

Normally I do a FaceBook LIVE every week and share it in the newsletter for those of you who don’t use FaceBook, but this week things didn’t exactly go as planned! My husband Danny (aka my camera man and the voice who reads the questions, at least when we are traveling) came down with the flu a couple of days ago. We are currently in Hong Kong, and we chose to transit here, our old stomping ground, on our way back to Los Angeles, after seeing my mom in India. Danny very rarely gets sick, so this was unusual for him, but he had been burning the candle at both ends. He has been spending our few days in Hong Kong rushing around, stressed, getting all the necessary stamps in his passport for all the places we are going to visit for the cruise in March and the trip to Europe a few months later.

The good news is that he got all the visas he required, and we were supposed to fly out to Los Angeles tonight. However, because he ended up getting  the flu, we’ve postponed our departure from Hong Kong for a couple of days, as it’s no fun being on a plane when you’re sick.  This evening, I made him a big bowl of chicken soup, and when I gave it to him, he sat up in the bed and said “I’m sorry I’m so broken today!”

Because it’s so rare for him to get sick, Danny tends to beat himself up when it happens. He thinks he’s done something wrong, and that’s why he’s sick. So I had to remind him that he’s not broken; he’s perfect and his body just needed a break from all the traveling and rushing around, so it was letting him know. So many of us think that we are broken, or that there’s something wrong with us, when things don’t go the way we want or expect.

“You are perfect the way you are. There’s nothing wrong with you. You’re not broken. You are everything you are trying to attain. Don’t take life seriously. Have fun. Laugh at yourself. Dance to Dancing Queen, and eat chocolate!”

~Quote from Inspire Nation interview

After Danny went to bed, I started working on this newsletter, and thought I’d take this opportunity to share one of my favorite video interviews with you.

I truly loved this interview with Michael Sandler of Inspire Nation, because I felt we had such a deep and beautiful conversation! I’d like to share it with you, and if you happen to have seen it before, this might be a great time to watch it again. (I notice I always receive different insights or “a-ha moments” when I listen to, or read something more than once.)

Mike asked GREAT questions during our really fun conversation, and I did a short guided meditation at the end.

Some of the topics we discussed include:

  • How to truly love yourself
  • My experience of being bullied as a child
  • Our fear of being judged
  • How parents can help children develop true empathy
  • How to align with your own Divine light
  • Why being spiritual does not equal having no ego
  • Mutual agreements for a healthy thriving relationship

The short meditation at the end is designed to get you re-focused on why you came to this earth, and on your heart’s truest desires for living this life of yours. I truly hope it helps open up more love for you.

The entire interview is long, but I hope you take the time to watch, because we get into a lot of details, and I believe the questions he asked, and what we discussed, will help many.

The video is below and if you feel the messages within it will help others, please share it.

By the time I connect with you next week, we’ll be back in Los Angeles, and I’m sure Danny will be back to his usual self again!

Much Love,
Anita

How in the world did I find Danny?

How in the world did I find Danny?

This weeks newsletter originally started out being way ahead of schedule. I was writing it on Tuesday morning in India as I was watching the sun starting to shine through the trees just outside the window at my mom’s house. Often, when I’m contemplating writing a newsletter or blog, I think of all of you, across the world, and what you are doing right now, as I write. Across all of Europe it was still the middle of the night (what my husband refers to as “oh my god o’clock”) and in the US, some of my friends would just be sitting down to dinner. Isn’t it amazing that the same instant in time could be so different depending on where you are. This was also the day that I was leaving India to head to Hong Kong. There was a lot to do that day – including pack!

All of a sudden, one of those notifications popped up on my phone that SCREAMED “Oprah Winfrey wins Cecil B DeMille Award at Golden Globe Awards and delivers a moving speech.” I clicked on the notification and, and it took me to a video of her speech. I clicked it, and watched, and listened.

You see, for many years I’d loved watching Oprah’s daily show on TV when I was back in Hong Kong and had hoped to meet her someday. She was one of the first women I admired, for all the social changes she was making in the world. She always used her voice for positive change, and has been, for a very long time, a great role model for many young women in the world.

The video of her speech was followed by a video of a backstage “Q&A” and she said something that resonated with every cell of my body. She was addressing a young film maker and said “Tell the stories that you not just yearn to tell, but if you don’t tell them, they won’t get told.”

This statement resonated with me deeply, because I believe that’s what I’ve been trying to do, and it’s actually not always easy. If you are anything like me (a recovering people-pleaser), and if you are not careful, as a public speaker and author, you find yourself falling into the trap of pandering to the critics, instead of saying what truly needs to be heard.

When I do events, especially the live events, I love the Q&A part because that means I get to meet you in person! If you’re coming to the Gwyneth Paltrow “goop” event in New York (it’s such an honor to be invited to speak there, by the way) at the end of this month or the cruise with me on in March, I’d love to hear your questions during the Q&A. The bigger and more challenging the questions the better, because I get to dig deeper into my own life’s experiences to answer them.

I’m not sure if you know but every week I do a FaceBook LIVE where I try to answer a “big” question, from the ones I receive via email.

Last week the question I answered was: “If you didn’t love yourself, and you were always focused on fearful thoughts before your near-death experience, how did you find the love of your life, your wonderful husband Danny, back then?” In answer to this, I told the story of what my relationships were like before meeting Danny and also share the one key experience that changed the way I looked at men and the possibilities in relationships.

In most of my FaceBook LIVEs there is usually enough time for me to answer some questions that people post right there in the comments section. This time because the internet was a bit unstable we had to cut the “show” short but I did get the chance to explain a little more about:

  • what it was like in the early years of our relationship before I understood the ultimate truth of unconditional love
  • my account of what changed for us after my NDE
  • my advice for anyone looking for an exceptional life partner

The video is below or, if you prefer, you can download and listen to the podcast by clicking on the links.

Much Love,
Anita

Turning Guilt into Gratitude

Turning Guilt into Gratitude

Happy New Year!

The start of the year has always been a time of new beginnings, new starts and new chapters in so many of our lives. It a time when we look at what our new accomplishments are going to be – for some it might be that new job or a new health and fitness routine. Maybe it’s to go out more (or less), study differently, take a relationship to a new level or have a new level of relationships……. Basically it’s thinking about moving forward.

Danny and I are visiting my mom who lives in India. We’ve been here about 4 weeks now and it’s almost time for us to leave. It’s always nice to see mom – she’s almost 91 years old (shhhh, I’m not supposed to tell anybody) and I still love spending time with her. Nowadays, sitting with her on her favorite sofa with a cup of hot masala tea and a trip down memory lane with her are a lot more frequent than our trips to the shopping mall or the grocery store but the laughter and giggles are still as warm and infectious as ever. And, she’s still got that “listen to your mother” look in her eyes!

Last week when I was preparing for the weekly FaceBook Live, I thought it would be such a beautiful time to remember all of the magnificence and the amazing people that have blessed our lives throughout the year. For me, it’s a time to reach out to these people and say “Thank You for being in my life”.

Well….. half way through the FB Live, we realized that the video was not working so the festive scarf I had on and the great blouse I was wearing wasn’t actually on camera! Luckily the mic was working properly so everybody could still hear me and we went on to have a great FaceBook LIVE podcast. Some of the questions I was asked were:

  • How can I heal shame?
  • How do I deal with loneliness?
  • What about control and irritation?
  • How do our guides from the other realm help us?
  • How can we connect with our guides and guidance?

If you would like to listen to this FaceBook LIVE, we’ve turned it into a podcast (below) so you can even download it if you want.

Much Love,
Anita
